CIRCA Projects

About

CIRCA Projects is a not-for-profit curatorial arts organisation. Its main goal is to present the viewer with coherently researched exhibitions that are embedded in the present. Our work is mainly based in the presentation and production of new art works and projects within lens-based and time-based practices. Hence our aim is to encourage a critical discussion around “contemporary art production” and we stress the importance of regularly organising artist talks, debates and lectures in order to create an access point to art and its contexts.

Exhibitions, screenings, talks, publications and commissions, in both gallery and off-site contexts, are some of the means by which CIRCA Projects works with artists – both established and at a more formative stage of their career to promote exciting new practices and critical dialogues.

Opening Hours

During exhibition periods CIRCA Projects is open Friday to Saturday, 11am–6pm and until 7pm on Thursday, or by appointment at other times. Please call (+44 (0)7722 470 229) or email if you would like to visit outside of regular hours.

The Stephenson Works

CIRCA Projects’ current home on South Street is a grand, Grade-II listed Georgian factory to the south of the city centre next to Central Station. Built in 1823 by George and Robert Stephenson, the building was the world’s first purpose-built locomotive works. Exhibitions take place over two floors, including a restored mezzanine which overlooks the original boiler shop.

CIRCA Projects offers visitors a warm welcome and our staff are always on hand to provide more information about the work. Visitors can also make use of the opportunity to explore this Grade-II listed building.

Getting Here

South Street is easily accessible by public transport. The building is located directly behind, and is just a short walk from, Central Station with regional and national rail and bus links as well as being the nearest Metro station. Our entrance on South Street is just off Forth Street, behind the Royal Mail sorting office. There is limited free parking available, and paid parking is located on Forth Street.

Access

CIRCA Projects presents projects, events and exhibitions in a variety of locations. The current gallery premises has stepped access from the street (3 steps) and an internal staircase (25 steps to the first floor). Staff are on hand to assist less able visitors and a lift access is available for wheelchair users by appointment (please allow 48 hours notice). Off-site projects take place in accessible venues wherever possible and appropriate — see specific venue information.
