Join us in Giles Bailey & CIRCA Projects’ shared studio at The Northern Charter, Newcastle, to test out works in progress, examine processes and share thoughts with invited guests. The studio is open to the public every Tuesday 7-9pm from May 23rd onwards, announcements of the focus of each evening will be published on social media in advance of the day.
Studio is Sudden #15 (August 22): Giles Bailey & CIRCA Projects will be inviting others to help them storyboard for a new work with the working title ‘A Curator Covered In Glue’.
Studio is Sudden #14 (August 16): Katy Bentham – In Pursuit. Research materials and performances in progress from Katy’s research in Rozelle Galleries in Alloway, Scotland.
Studio is Sudden #13 (August 8): Conversation with artist Jo Coupe and musician Lee Stokoe (Culver) about their work and other artworks made in Gateshead.
Studio is Sudden #12 (August 1): Deanna Smith – We have these tools. Sound performance and participatory session with Deanna Smith’s sound sculptures.
Studio is Sudden #11 (July 25): A public event – which is also a video shoot for a new project by Kathryn Elkin. Featuring live performances from Dawn Bothwell, Tess Denman-Cleaver, Grace Denton, Rene McBrearty, Heather Bonnie Reid and Nicola Singh.
Studio is Sudden #10 (July 18): Visit to talk and screening by Connect/Exchange artist Gary Zhexi Zhang at BALTIC.

Studio is Sudden #7 (June 27): Listening event where we heard Anne-James Chaton’s Événements 09.
Studio is Sudden #6 (June 20): Talk with curator Michael McHugh and looking through unaccessioned items from Saltwell Museum Collection in the studio, including original museum labels and install shots of displays.
Studio is Sudden #5 (June 13): A visit to The Old Policehouse, Gateshead to see Beyt al Tapes, Carrageenan, Kleevex and DJ Kerm.
Studio is Sudden #4 (June 6): We were joined by artist Peter Todd, who discussed his experiences and work in Newcastle in late 1970s as a student of Stuart Marshall at Newcastle polytechnic and running experimental space Ayton Basement. Peter led a group rendition of Marshall’s work Idiophonics, Giles Bailey presented a new version of Petrified Dog Shit and Conal McStravick presented a new performance work involving profiteroles, intimacy and his personal archive of rejection letters.
Studio is Sudden #3 (May 30): A workshop featuring performance, creative writing and video-making activities led by Giles Bailey in response to objects in Tyne and Wear Museums and Archives Saltwell Collection. In preparation for a workshop and new performance work for The Shipley Art Gallery’s centenary.
Studio is Sudden #2 (May 23): A rehearsal reading for Giles Bailey’s new work in progress ‘The Third Dimension of Sound at Your Fingertips or Petrified Dog Shit’.
Studio is Sudden #1 (May 20): Studio is Sudden launched as part of The Late Shows, with an open studio exhibition featuring a selection of existing works by Giles Bailey previously unseen in the region. Works included were I Bought A Little City (2012), Interview with Gustav Metzger (2014) and A Dead Horse In A Tree (2017, with Shakeeb Abu Hamdan).
