This Studio is Sudden will meet at the Star and Shadow Cinema – a DIY community cultural & arts hub run by volunteers in Newcastle upon Tyne. In 2016 the cinema, run non-hierarchically entirely by volunteers, took the decision to buy its own building, a vast ex-furniture showroom currently being renovated by volunteers into a cinema, venue, studios and cafe.
This screening will take place as part of an experimental induction into the building site – hi-viz p.p.e will be handed out, and audience will become active participants, if not already, in the building of the Star and Shadow. There will be a tour and talk about the cinema to prepare audience members with the legally required information to be able to help on the building site, followed by a special screening within the unfinished cinema space of Sarah Turner’s film ‘Public House’.
Public House tells the story of the Ivy House Pub in Peckham. Slated to be sold to property developers in 2012, the local community triumphantly came together to save the pub from closure. This documentary is a story of social resilience and the power of communities working together. Made in collaboration with some of the many users of the pub, the film features their voices, poems and performances, as well as key moments in the community takeover which led the Ivy House to become one of the UK’s first co-operatively owned pubs and the country’s first ‘asset of community value’.
